| Which companies are doing the best job of managing their reputations? If Corporate Responsibility Magazine's "100 Best Corporate Citizens List" is any indication, the nod goes to technology giants HP and Intel, which received the top rankings for 2010. HP moved to first place after being ranked fifth in 2009. Intel climbed from #13 to take the second spot, followed by General Mills, IBM, Kimberly-Clark and Abbott Labs. Bristol Myers, the top-ranked company in 2009, slipped to a still-respectable seventh place.
The biggest climber in the top 10 was eighth-place Coca-Cola Co., which ranked 56th last year. Gap and Hess Corp. rounded out the top 10.
The business pub, previously known as CRO Magazine, based its analysis on publicly available data points in seven categories: Environment, Climate Change, Human Rights, Philanthropy, Employee Relations, Financial Performance and Governance.
All of the companies in the top 100 seem to be doing a better job, at least based on the mag's criteria. Publisher Jay Whitehead noted that the average score for the entire list increased by 19 percent.
"Company stakeholders from investors to customers to employees to regulators watch the 100 Best Corporate Citizens List closely, and are using it now more than ever to make important decisions," he said in a statement posted on the website. "As a result, making the List is worth millions or even billions in increased shareholder and brand value. That is why we are seeing leading companies focusing in greater numbers on their public reporting and performance, particularly in the areas of climate change, environment, employee relations, and human rights."
