Battle for TV Network News Supremacy Enters a New Time Zone: Local Stations Fought It Out Last Season Over Late Night Spots, But Now They are Competing Over the Middle-of-the-Night Crowd

With the Conan/Leno fiasco in full swing, the big battle in television last season was fought over late night. But this season, the battleground is shaping up to be much earlier — or some would say much later. Stations in Boston, New York, Washington and other cities are adding 4:30 a.m. newscasts this month, joining a backward march that started in earnest a few years ago. In catering to the earliest of the early risers, stations are reacting to the behavior patterns that are evident in the Nielsen ratings. Simply put, Americans are either staying awake later or waking up earlier — and either way, they are keeping the television on.

New Survey Shows Expectations of Corporate Social Responsibility Tend to Fizzle Out Among Younger, More Skeptical Consumers: Results of Canadian Poll May Be Reflective of U.S. Citizenry

Younger consumers are less likely than their parents to choose which products they buy based on a company's reputation for social responsibility, a new Canadian survey suggests. The poll's results found that only 16 percent of those under the age of 30 said a company's reputation was "very important" for them in making product choices, compared with more than 75 percent of respondents over the age of 55. Incidents such as the BP oil spill— in which a company that had marketed itself as socially responsible saw its reputation tarnished— may be fueling youth cynicism, one expert noted.

During the final set of Washington hearings this week held by the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission , the former CEO of Lehman Bros . blamed the government for its collapse, saying there was a double standard in the decision by federal officials to grant extraordinary assistance to other companies but let his go bankrupt. "In the end … Lehman was forced into bankruptcy not because it neglected to act responsibly but because of a decision … not to provide Lehman with the support given to each of its competitors and other non-financial firms in the ensuing days," Richard S. Fuld Jr . testified.

By Kathy Van Duzer, PR & Marketing Consultant Managing a client's expectations upfront has always been key in the public relations and marketing service field. Having worked on the client side, the agency side and consulting side, I've seen the 360-degree view. When you clash with a client or agency over goals and expectations within the first few weeks of working somebody missed the boat. When writing proposals, most goals are clearly written and agreed to before any work takes place. This is necessary before any contract is even written. But, when clients blatantly can't see the value in your work (they hired you because you know more than they do) what do you do? Sometimes the best thing is to walk away. Here are some tips to consider before you get to that point …

Recent Lawsuit Challenges a Video Game Maker's Responsibility to a Gaming Addict: Hawaii Man Scores Early-Round Victory as Court Decides End-User Agreement Doesn't Necessarily Negate Liability

Once doctors declared that "World of Warcraft" was "the crack cocaine of gaming," everyone, including industry decision-makers, seemed to accept that gaming addiction was yet another human frailty — and gaming companies even chose to protect themselves with an end-user agreement that limited their own liability in creating something that might get others hooked. However, Craig Smallwood , a Hawaii man who claims to be hooked on "Lineage II," has succeeded in the first round of what might be a long bout in challenging an end-user agreement, CNET reports.

New Survey Shows Ground Zero Mosque Issue Dividing New York City and the Nation: Obama and NYC Mayor Bloomberg Continue to Support Project, But Positions May Change as Elections Near

The construction of a Muslim Center at the Ground Zero site continues to be a hot-button issue, according to a new survey. Polling by Quinnipiac University indicated that the $100 million 13-story center has divided the city and even the nation in two. "The heated, sometimes angry debate over the proposal to build a mosque two blocks from ground zero has New York state voters twisted in knots," said Quinnipiac poll director Maurice "Mickey" Carroll . "Overwhelmingly, across all party and regional lines, New Yorkers say the sponsors ought to voluntarily move the proposed mosque to another location."

New Report from BP Shows Oil Giant Spent Three Times as Much On Advertising in Weeks Following Deepwater Disaster as It Did During Comparable Period in 2009

In response to a congressional committee's demand this week for BP 's advertising budget in the weeks following the Deepwater catastrophe, the oil giant revealed that it had indeed significantly increased its spending after the oil spill. BP spent $93.4 million on newspaper, magazine, television and Internet advertising in the three months following the disaster, three times what it spent in the comparable period in 2009, the company reported to Congress. The company told the House Energy and Commerce Committee that it had put fewer television and radio commercials on the air after the accident than it did a year earlier, but those it did were longer and ran nationwide.

Toyota's Image Back Under the Spotlight: State Supreme Court Rules that Carmaker Must Face Charges that It Deliberately Withheld Safety Documents in Paralyzing 2005 Camry Accident

The Texas Supreme Court has ruled that Toyota must face charges that it acted in contempt of court in a 2007 lawsuit involving a woman who was paralyzed when her Camry rolled over five years ago. The personal injury suit was originally settled for $1.5 million — but last fall the woman filed a motion alleging that the automaker had deliberately withheld documents related to vehicle safety in the course of that case, leading her to settle rather than seek more money or go to trial. The ruling could have serious implications for Toyota — if these allegations are upheld the automaker could face the prospect that perhaps hundreds of other long-closed lawsuits against the automaker could be reconsidered on similar grounds.
